North End

Queen Chapel AME Church is a historic African Methodist Episcopal congregation on Hilton Head Island, deeply rooted in the Gullah Geechee community and the broader tradition of the AME Church that played a vital role in the spiritual, social, and political life of freed African Americans throughout the South following the Civil War. The AME Church was founded by free Black Americans in the late 18th century as an institution of spiritual and community self-determination, and Queen Chapel carries that legacy forward on Hilton Head Island. The church has been a cornerstone of the island's Gullah neighborhoods for generations, representing the enduring faith, cultural resilience, and community solidarity that have defined the Gullah Geechee people through centuries of challenge and change. A significant and meaningful site on the island's Gullah Heritage Trail.
